MANILA - Willie Revillame announced on Friday on his hit noontime show "Wowowee" that he received P2 million in cold cash allegedly from an anonymous donor. 

Revillame said the cash was placed in 3 brown envelopes and delivered to his house on Thursday, July 30.

"Ito, binuksan ko kagabi, tatlong sobre at ang laman nito ay puro pera. Ito ay totoong pera at nakalagay sa envelope ay 'urgent.' Ang laman ng isang envelope ay P500,000, 'yong isa P750,000 at ang isa ay P750,000 din, a total of P2 million," he said.

The host, who reportedly earns P1 million a day, said he "does not need the money." Thus, after consulting his lawyer, he decided to give away the money to charity.

"Tutal, sa akin na po ito. Gusto kong makita niyo at ayaw kong naglilihim sa inyo. 'Yong P500,000 ibibigay ko sa Bantay Bata. 'Yong P500,000 ibibigay ko sa 71 Dreams Foundation, 'yong naulila sa stampede. 'Yong P500,000 ibibigay ko po sa mga OFW na hindi makauwi na nandoon pa din sa Dubai," he said.

"'Yong P100,000 ay ibibigay ko sa conjoined twins, 'yong dalawang ulong bata. So, may P400,000 na matitira, 'yong P400,000 na 'yon ay ilalagay ko na...sa 'Wowowee' yon, para sa mga batang hindi nakakapag-aral at sa mga batang kapos sa kaligayan. 'Yong P400,000 na 'yon ay dito na sa 'Wowowee'," he added.

Revillame thanked the person who gave the P2 million cash because it enabled him to help those in need.

"Hindi po ako naghahangad ng malaking pera. Ang hangad ko po ay maraming tao ang matulungan at mapasaya," he said.

Baby girl with two heads born in Manila

A tricycle driver's wife gave birth to a two-headed baby girl at the Dr. Jose Fabella Memorial Hospital in Manila, Tuesday night.

Salvador Arganda, tricycle driver and resident of Mutinlupa City, said his wife, Chaterian, gave birth to "Baby Girl Arciaga" around 8:45 p.m. He said he last saw their baby around midnight at the hospital's neo-natal intensive care unit.

Arganda said they had suspicions that Chaterian was carrying two babies because both sides of their families have twin members.

He said their suspicion was erased after being told that there was only one baby inside Chaterian’s womb, based on her initial ultrasound.

On Saturday, Chaterian went back to the hospital for another ultrasound session and they were told that the baby would come out of her womb head first and that she would have to give birth by caesarean section.

Arganda said they were surprised when doctors told them that Chaterian gave birth to a baby with two heads.

The tricycle driver said he and his wife are praying for the baby to live.

"Sana mabuhay ang bata. Kakayanin naming mag-asawa iyon," he said when asked how will they take care of the child with his meager pay as a tricycle driver.

Dr. Ruben Flores, Fabella hospital's director, said the baby's case is called dicephaly monozygotic conjoined twins, which, he said, is a very rare occurrence.

Flores said they will use the hospital's resources to sustain the baby's life.

Dr. Melissa Juico of the hospital's newborn unit, meanwhile, said they will subject the baby to 2-D (two-dimensional) echocardiogram to determine if the child has only one heart.

Juico said the "twins" would not be able to live long enough with only one heart or if they are sharing vital organs.

A radio dzMM report said the baby was crying a lot and was very responsive.

The baby's grandmother, Celestina, told radio dzMM that their family would need financial assistance for the baby's medical expenses.

Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim has pledged to help the baby's family and Bantay Bata 163, ABS-CBN Foundation's child welfare program has started extending assistance to the baby's family.

UNDP to help RP fight 'rise' of AIDS threat

The UN Development Programme said Tuesday it will help the Philippines fight rising HIV infections, which reached record monthly levels for the country this year.

"All the main ingredients for an epidemic are present in the country. First, HIV transmission through unprotected sex accounts for 89 percent of reported cases," the agency said in a statement.

Condom use among the most at-risk, including homosexual men, female sex workers and their male clients, remained below 90 percent, it added.

Manila and the UNDP are on Thursday to launch a three-year program on "mitigating the negative impacts of HIV and AIDS on human development," the organization said.

A record 89 new HIV cases were registered in May, bringing the total for 2009 to 322.

The government estimates that in 2007 there were 7,490 people in the Philippines living with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, up from about 6,000 in 2002.

Teacher with A(H1N1) dies in Muntinlupa: mayor

A school teacher infected with the influenza A(H1N1) virus has died in Muntinlupa City, a local chief executive said Friday.

Muntinlupa City Mayor Aldrin San Pedro said the 43-year-old teacher, who was diagnosed with having A(H1N1), died in a hospital in the city.

The mayor declined to identify the teacher.

The Department of Health has yet to confirm the teacher's death.

The Muntinlupa City teacher is the fourth A(H1N1) casualty in the Philippines since the Department of Health (DOH) started monitoring the spread of the disease in May.

The first A(H1N1) death in the Philippines was a 50-year-old female employee of the House of Representatives. The other two were a 19-year-old who had a history of asthma, and a 74-year-old with emphysema.

Based on DOH's last update, there were already 2,668 confirmed cases of the new influenza virus in the country. It said most of the patients have fully recovered. With a report from Rod Izon, radio dzMM

5 students in Laguna infected with A(H1N1) --DepEd

MANILA, Philippines -- Five high school students in Laguna province have been infected with the Influenza A(H1N1) virus, the Department of Education (DepEd) announced today.

According to the DepEd, the five A(H1N1)-infected students were from the San Pablo National High School in San Pablo, Laguna.

Because of this, DepEd Assistant Secretary Thelma Santos said the soap-making training supposed to be held in the school was cancelled.

The school already has 187 A(H1N1) cases, prompting school administrators to suspend classes until July 20.

"Of the 207 confirmed cases, most may have already been released but we have no information when or how many," the DepEd said of the total number of students in different schools infected by swine flu.

The DepEd also reported that as of 5 p.m. yesterday, six public high schools, six public elementary schools and six private schools have been closed from July 10 to 20.

The department also said that "throat swabbing" is still being done for suspected cases of swine flu in other schools in San Pablo, including Canossa College and Academia de San Ignacio de Loyola.

DOH: 2 more flu patients die

- The Department of Health (DOH) yesterday reported two more deaths from Influenza A(H1N1), bringing to three the total number of Filipinos who have died from the virus.

Dr. Yolanda Oliveros, director of the DOH’s National Center for Disease Prevention and Control, said the fatalities were a 74-year-old man and a 19-year-old man who had asthma. The two patients died last week.

Oliveros told The STAR that the older man had underlying illnesses like chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder, emphyzema, hypertension, cardio-vascular disease and tuberculosis.

“He was multiple high-risk... That is why in our mitigation strategy, we primarily focus on the severe cases and those with underlying conditions,” she added.

The country’s first death from A(H1N1) was a 49-year-old mother who was working at the House of Representatives.

Based on autopsy, the old man died from “congestive heart failure secondary to acute myocardial infraction aggravated by severe pneumonia either bacterial, viral or both.”

It turned out that the septuagenarian also had tuberculosis, enlarged liver, kidney and spleen, and tyromegaly or goiter.

Records of DOH’s Hotline for H1N1 showed that as of last week, there were 2,668 confirmed cases but 2,543 of these have already recovered.

On the recommendation of the World Health Organization (WHO), the DOH had shifted its anti-A (H1N1) program from containment to mitigation after establishing that the virus is “mild in nature.”

And while the virus is easily spread through air droplets or respiratory discharges, most infected patients have recovered even before they started taking medication.

But Oliveros warned that while A(H1N1) is mild, the public should not let their guard down.

She reiterated the DOH’s call for the strict observance of personal hygiene, particularly the covering of mouth when sneezing and coughing and constant washing of the hands, as the virus can survive on wet or moist surfaces for up to six hours.

Under the mitigation strategy, the DOH had done away with contact tracing and the mandatory 10-day quarantine.

Interim guidelines of the DOH showed that anti-viral treatment with Oseltamivir is “only for confirmed cases with severe progressive illness or concurrent medical condition that compromise their immune system.”

“Those with stable clinical manifestations or those identified when they were in the recovery state of the illnesses... are for home care,” the guidelines stated.

Laboratory diagnosis or throat swab sampling is done as part of the investigation of first suspected cases in a specific area or community and of a person with influenza-like illnesses (ILI) who are at risk of developing complications because of existing medical conditions.

The guidelines showed that swab testing could also be done randomly in clusters “with ILI manifesting with unusual symptoms or severity.”

Regine Velasquez has A(H1N1)

Asia's Songbird, Regine Velasquez, tested positive for influenza A(H1N1) virus but she has already recovered. 

Velasquez said she got infected by the virus days before her much-awaited guesting in Charice's first major concert last June 27 at SMX Convention Center.

"Mabilis lang pero buti na lang hindi naman matinding strain. I found out I was already okay kasi sa dami ng nagpa-pa-checkup [na-delay iyong result ng swab test]," she said.

She admitted that she got scared when she was diagnosed with H1N1. 

"Understandable naman nga kasi nga naging pandemic nga. It's scary kasi at that time when it came out, we didn't even know how to treat it," she said. 

During the quarantine period, she said she wore a mask so as not to infect those who are close to her. 

Velasquez was the first local celebrity to publicly admit that she got infected by the disease. 

"It felt like that, trangkaso lang. Pero siyempre sa mga dami ng chismis, hindi mo maalis na ma-praning ka, di ba? Pero may katotohanan pala ang pagka-praning ko," she said. 

She said she learned that the best thing to do in order to combat any disease is to keep oneself healthy. 

"Kasi kung talagang malakas ang immune system mo, hindi ka naman tatamaan ng sakit," she said. 

The singer also attributed her speedy recovery to the following: adequate rest, vitamins, and boyfriend Ogie Alcasid. 

"Yeah, he took care of me," she said. 

The Department of Health has already recorded a total of 1,709 confirmed A (H1N1) cases in the Philippines as of June 27, 2009.

Meanwhile, Velasquez apologized to Charice because she was not able to perform during the latter’s first major concert. 

Charice was reportedly teary eyed when she learned that her idol could not make it in the concert. Velasquez said she also felt the same way.  

She said she hopes that the international singing sensation will again invite her to perform in her next concert.

Update 25: H1N1 cases hit 1,709; 1,485 recover

The Department of Health (DOH) has recorded 1,709 confirmed cases of Influenza A(H1N1) in the country as of June 27, but the good news is that 1,485 of them are now free of the virus.

“The remaining 224 or 14 percent are still under treatment at present, most of them under home management,” Health Secretary Francisco Duque III said in a statement yesterday.

The DOH, according to the health chief, is anticipating more cases in the coming months, so it would “institute effective mitigation measures to save lives and prevent deaths and to reduce the impact of the pandemic on our nation and the economy.”

Although the cases are dwindling as compared to some few weeks ago, several schools were still forced to suspend classes or implement measures to prevent the virus from spreading.

Four cadets of the Philippine National Police Academy (PNPA) have tested positive for the virus, prompting school officials to implement stricter measures.

PNPA director Chief Superintendent Danilo Abarsoza said the four cadets were among the trainees in Silang, Cavite, who availed of their weekend pass last week. There are 1,030 cadets in the academy.

The latest suspension of classes was reported at the St. John’s Institute (SJI) in Bacolod City.

Bacolod City Mayor Evelio Leonardia said the school administration confirmed the suspension as a precaution after more than 100 students fell ill due to the common flu Monday.

Although the DOH regional office is not treating the situation as “case under observation,” the Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital will be conducting random swabbing and contact tracing among parents of Grade 3 students.

SJI principal Fr. Noli Que informed Leonardia that 30 of the 60 pupils no longer have fever, as of press time yesterday.

Two schools in Tacloban City, Leyte and in Antipolo City, Rizal also suspended classes at all levels due to confirmed cases despite a government instruction to schools to avoid entire school shutdowns.

The Department of Education (DepEd) Influenza A(H1N1) Action Center said the San Benildo Integrated School suspended classes starting yesterday until July 11, while the St. Therese Child Development Center in Tacloban City suspended classes starting yesterday until July 6.

Kenneth Tirado, DepEd communications unit head, said that DepEd was still giving schools the prerogative to decide whether to have entire school shutdowns or limiting suspensions to affected

The actress bested 99 other female stars in the magazine's poll of its readers.
