The Good and Bad about TV5 (ABS-CBN MULTIPLY ACOUNT)

I have been monitoring Associated Broadcasting Company (ABC) or commonly known as TV5. PLDT Group though its subsidiary Mediaquest bought majority shares on TV5 from Malaysian media group MPB Primedia and Mr. Tonyboy Cojuangco in the last quarter of 2008. And now TV5 unravels its new look and soon a new broadcast city in Mandaluyong City. ABS-CBN and GMA admitted that they are not threatened by TV5's growth but they are prepared to compete with them.

The new TV5 has a new logo, new talents and a new show. I am monitoring TV5 since last month until today so that I could write a fair review based on my observations.

Here are the good things I see on TV5.

- TV5 has a stronger News and Current affairs department called News 5. I watched "SAPUL", TV5's newest morning show (pitted against ABS-CBN's Umagang Kay Ganda and GMA's Unang Hirit) and its nice naman. May traffic news, national and metro news, weather and other news. I just find host Erwin Tulfo a little stiff for a bubbly and alive morning show.

- Good thing about TV5 is they don't make gaya-gaya shows from other networks but they borrow concepts and ideas from foreign shows. Face to Face is a good example. Its similar to The Jerry Springer show. Another show is Documentado which similar to TMZ. The difference is Documentado is more political and more on current affairs as compared to TMZ which is focused on showbiz.

- May mga tinatapat sila sa mga shows ng ABS-CBN and GMA pero hindi nila ito ginagaya. For example, PO5, a Sunday noontime show is not as the same format as ASAP XV and Party Pilipinas. Its like RPN's Family Kwarta o Kahon or GMA Supershow which are defunct game shows.

- TV5 is also experimental. This is my favorite thing about TV5. They didn't pit Paparazzi, a Sunday showbiz talk show, against The Buzz and Showbiz Central. They put it instead on an earlier timeslot - 2:30pm to 4:00pm. Their teen drama BFGF is on 4pm Sunday timeslot instead of putting it on 3pm timeslot. I hope their strategy works. They don't have weekday primetime teleseryes. They opted to put once a week programs on weekday primetime just like ABS-CBN and GMA used to do before.

- They offer non-exclusive contracts to new talents which is good move.

Here are the things I don't like about TV5.

- They are now starting to attack the two leading TV stations just like ABS-CBN and GMA are doing to each other. I hope a healthy competition prevails.

- There are still little but improved advertiser's confidence on TV5. Since TV5 is owned by PLDT's Mediaquest, most of their commercials and sponsors are PLDT products like PLDT myDSL, PLDT Watchpad, Cignal TV, Smart Bro, Smart Buddy, etc.

- They pirate ABS-CBN and GMA staff too much. Mostly their juices and contributions were already seen on both stations. I hope they hire new people para new ideas.

- They hired Cristy Fermin as the new host of Juicy and Paparazzi. Wala lang gagawin si Cristy Fermin is to attack Kris Aquino and Boy Abunda everyday.

Honestly there is not much I don't like about TV5. Its like ABS-CBN's sister station but its NOT. I watch TV5 as if I am watching ABS-CBN. I hope AGB and TNS could also show TV ratings of TV5. As far as I am concerned TV5 is a close 3rd among the ranks and its ready to overtake GMA in Mega Manila.
