MANILA, Philippines (Xinhua) - Dengue cases in the Philippines may have "peaked" and if so, would be "slowly declining" in the next couple of weeks, the country's Health Secretary Enrique Ona said today.

Ona told reporters in a news briefing that the situation remains "manageable" even if the incidence of dengue cases is higher during this period compared to last year, and there are more fatalities now than in 2009.

There were 62,503 cases of dengue reported nationwide, and of this number, 465 have died, compared with 350 fatalities during the same period last year, he said.

However, Ona said, compared with the situation 10 years ago, the fatality rate from dengue has dropped from 2 percent to less than one percent, adding that Metro Manila has suffered less dengue cases this year.
